INFO:
To our pelvic floor girlies tribe, you need to hear this—Give your muscles a proper release before you contract—they’ll thank you later. 💖 Pelvic floor tightness or overactivity can cause you to leak, even if you have been religiously strengthening your pelvic floor. Your muscles have two functions - contracting and relaxing. When a muscle contracts, it shortens to increase the crosslinks between all of the muscle fibers. These crosslinks are what allow us to keep tone and tension in the muscle as it works. When the muscle has finished working, the crosslinks unhook so that the muscle can relax and rest. The more crosslinks you have between muscle fibers, the stronger your muscle is. But, if your muscle is already contracted, it can’t create any more crosslinks to hold extra load. So a tight or already-contracted pelvic floor will struggle to work harder to hold extra load, which is why you may leak when you sneeze, laugh, cough, exercise or get a sudden strong urge to pee. Your pelvic floor does not need a maximal contraction all-day to stop you leaking. Learning to relax your pelvic floor can help you free up more muscle crosslinks so that you can use them when you need some extra strength. This is a very common area that we help women in every day, and tailor treatment to help you better control your pelvic floor in a variety of situations.
